Grey is okey

Grombre, grey, silver… all shades of grey used to be synonymous with unwanted when it came to women’s hair color and therefore, often instantly concealed. However, things are finally changing, and grey hair is becoming something women of all ages are embracing.

Several actresses have in the past few years proudly put their beginning grey strands on display on the red carpet. Jessica Biel showed off her natural grey streaks at the 2018 Golden Globes, as did Katie Holmes at the Grammys that same year. Chrissy Teigen famously tweeted about her emerging grey hair, stating happily that her Cruella dreams are coming true.

The increased popularity is also evident on social media. Instagram account @grombre, that reposts and celebrates women who show off their grey hair, has 232,000 followers. The hashtag #Greyhair has been used 1,7 million times and #silverhair is not far behind. At the same time, grey hair is a popular search on Pinterest.

So, what is behind this trend? Perhaps it is about women standing up against the conventional view that they must hide all signs of aging. By proudly displaying their greys they are sending a powerful statement of self-acceptance, helping to redefine society’s idea of beauty.
